About three years ago, my dad and I started digging in a dump that opened
in the 1800's and closed sometime in the 1940's. It's well over
300
acres and some of the mounds rise over 300 feet. Apparently,
in northern
Pennsylvania, when they dumped these mountains of garbage, they did
it with
layers of ash, dirt, or rocks in between. By digging through
the sides
of the mountain, we are able to hit "veins" or "layers" that seem to
contain
remains of that period in time. The dumps are so old that the
only thing
that is left is glass, china, and crockery. Everything else has decomposed
and all the metal has rusted away. It is rare to find any metal
on the tops
of the bottles and jars. We also find old china and pottery items.
If you are looking for a particular bottle, let us know and we will
keep your
request on file. We never know what we are going to uncover next.
