In June of 1995, Governor Christine Whitman and the Republican
legislature passed a law establishing the state's new car emissions program -
SCS 1700. Critics of the new emissions program raised volumes of criticism,
which scared the state from implementing the new program for over 4 years.
Reassurance by state officials that the new program was actually
beneficial to NJ drivers, a forgetful and easily manipulated public, and most
importantly, the media's complicity in supporting the state in all their
claims, put the state's program back on track.
It is now here - and looks like it will be even worse
than expected!
Provided below, you will find the same information that caused the
state to postpone the program for 4 years. Information includes all legal
citations from the actual legislation, and most importantly, sound files of DMV
Director Dick Kamin actually describing the new emissions program at a meeting
of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
OK - So what can you do to save your car? CALL YOUR LEGISLATOR AND
COMPLAIN LOUDLY!!! It's the only thing these arrogant bureaucrats
understand.
Ask your Republican legislators why they voted for SCS-1700 - virtually
all of them did. Was their arm twisted to vote yes by the Governor's office, or
by the lobbyist who was paid $500,000 to get it passed. Did your legislators
even read the bill, did they understand it, or did they simply not care about
your rights? Ask them why they DEFEATED an attempt to repeal this legislation a
few years ago when the horrendous specifics about the test became known?
Ask your Democratic legislators why they have stood silent on the issue
since its passage in 1995. Was it a political deal with the Republicans to
remain quiet, as some Democrats have suggested? What did they get in return? Or
are the Democrats equally in contempt for your basic rights and well being - a
surprising realization since it is lower income people, their majority of
Democratic political support, that will be screwed over the hardest by this
legislation.
