9/30/01 East River Chas Stamm
Fished with HRFA member Joe Curvino today and put up with 6-foot seas in the
Hudson North of the George Washington Bridge. 30 MPH winds out of the north really
kicked up the white caps. Rods in the holders on the roof of the boat were getting
drenched!Getting across the Hudson was the big challenge. Once we got in through the
Spytun Dyval Bridge opening
the waters of the Harlem River were calm.
We fished the upper region of the East river, which was also not affected by the
winds. Bluefish were working the surface all over the place. Not big fish,
maybe 4 and 5 pounders but in light of the conditions of the Hudson, and fearing we were
not going to get out at all, this was great. Birds kept working and bluefish kept
torpedoing through the surface the entire outgoing tide. Water temps were 68
degrees. Top water plugs, bucktails and cast masters were the baits of choice.
Bigger fish came off the bottom on the Charlie Rig. For as bad as the conditions
were in getting across the Hudson, The East River was paradise. All fish were
released.
Ran in to HRFA member Glenn Cinneli who came up the East River from the Battery. He
told us of Bluefish to 14 pounds off Dimond Reef. He was allowed to fish there for a
couple of hours until one patrol boat told him to leave and ruined it for him.
HRFA member Barry Davis Told me of getting out during the week and finding weakfish and
blues past the Vz at the Reach. He was able to get to the lower harbor
via the East River as well. Barry told us of a smell as he pasted through the Battery that
he would not soon forget.

9/29/01 Fishin Mission Mark Strober
Fished Saturday 9/29/01 with club member Glenn Blank, on his boat, due to the
terrible events on Sept. 11, we fished the outer reaches of the East River &
Whitestone Bridge areas. Despite the high winds, and limited fishing areas,
we caught about 16 striped bass. The largest was 27 inches, 2 of the fish had
tags in them! All were released. We also had about a dozen blues,
largest
was 31 inches. Tight Lines to all! And God Bless America!
9/23/01 East River Bass And Blues
HRFA member Barry Davis and his brother Dan, fished with HRFA director and web
master Chas Stamm on Sunday in the northern region of the East River. The trio of
anglers brought about 15 fish to the boat. Striped bass to 10 pounds and Bluefish to
14 pounds were caught and released. both the outgoing and incoming tides produced
fish off the bottom. A photo of Barry's 14 pound bluefish is the "photo of the
month" for October at the beginning of these reports.
9/18/01 Tappan Zee Bridge
The terror that shut down our hearts, city, country, and our river will leave
a permanent scar. Needing to get away from the reports we set out to do what
makes us happiest and makes us feel most comfortable - fishing. Not being
able nor wanting to fish the harbor we dropped blood worms just south of the
Tappan Zee and good ol' Uncle Sam sent a never ending school of snapper blues
and short stripers towards our boat. Light tackle, good conversation, and the
tenacious fish put a patch on our spirits and renewed our belief that this
country can overcome and conquer any troubles that some lunatics send our
way. Keep the lines tight and god bless this beautiful home of ours.

Not a lot of time so I'll just run right thru it. We have been hitting the
reef for sea bass and scoring well. Sunday regular Jose Quardron and friends
limited with 125 C-bass with 3 fish reaching the 4lb mark and several in the
3lb range. Weakfish have been abundant in the reach with limits the norm.
STAY AWAY FROM THE FLEET!!! Most fish are in the 16 - 24 inch slot but now
and then we get lucky and nail a 5lb fish. We made a stop at the Verrazano
and boated 12 keeper weaks on our way home Sunday. Blues can be found any
where from the Mud south to the oil wreck. The Phil Griffo party was on board
last week and we casted underneath the birds down around the reach and scored
well with Spanish mackerel and small blues. from there we headed a little
east and put 32 weak fish in the box and topped the day off with 2 buckets of
porgies. If you want Albi's and Bonito just sail south along the beaches.
Every other day they appear in good #'s. Some times a bit further off shore.
We are scoring with SMALL tins and frozen spearing on a 1/0 live bait hook. A
good friend of mine Capt. Ken Dubman who sail the K KAT is on a good fluke
bite by this seasons standards. Ken is fishing between the channels(SH &
Ambrose) and faired well all week. He has put several 3 - 5lb fish in the box
all in this area. Too bad the fluke season is about to end. No love lost here.

9/9/01 East River Still holding Bass and Blues
Chas Stamm fished again with Norm and Paul Andreasen today with good action on
striped bass to 6 pounds and bluefish to 5 pounds. Water temps were still in the mid
seventy range. Sandworms fished on the bottom produced all the fish.
9/3/01 Fishin Mission
Fished again Monday 9/03 ( Labor Day ) with my 8 year old daughter
Amanda.
We started out at the Bayridge Flats catching and releasing short fluke. As
were club members Chas Stamm & Ken Carson. Then a school of cocktail blues
chased bait by us. I casted top water and my daughter jigged the bottom.
Double header, at that moment life does not get any better, my daughter and
I both with blues on. 8 years old & she jigged and hooked up all by
herself. From there we ran south for more fluke, lots of sea bass, and to
top it all off she caught the largest Porgy I have ever seen! A real
slab-dinner plate size fish! All fished were released to swim another day (
besides she doesn't like killing them. ) Some were tagged. Tight Lines
to
all. I have to get back to hearing about this porgy for the 100th time!
9/3/01 Lower NYC Harbor Chas Stamm & Ken Carson
I fished with Captain Ken Carson today in the Lower Harbor of NYC. We had
a mixed bag of small fish. We had originally intended to fish the East River but the
Bridgekeeper at Spytun Dyval did not show up for work and we were not able to pass.
A call to the coast guard reported this incident but the fishing plans had to
change. Bayridge flats produced surface action on the cocktail blues while plenty of
short fluke were captured off the bottom. It was entertaining on light tackle.
Rattle Traps and 2 oz jigs were great fun on the blues. The Vz. bridge produced
several larger fish and a couple of weakfish got off but again...no great sizes.
Plenty of short fluke around the Vz. bridge. All shorts. water temps 73 at the
Vz. Bridge.
9/2/01 Fishin Mission
Fished Sunday Sept. 2, the NY Harbor and surrounding areas for a mixed bag of
12 schoolie stripers, 1 cocktail blue, 6 fluke, & 12 sea bass.
September 2000 Fishing Reports
9/30/00 Gil Hawkins / Paul Hellmold Renegade Bluefish
Big blues to 30"s East River and Center Harbor. Paul and I caught 5
sat. all over 26"s, one 9lbs, and one at Ellis Island.
I caught a 30" striper at HG. Lots of fish caught by many HRFA boats.
9/29/00 Screaming Reel
Another good week. When the weather held out catches were good. Mid week
the Bob Santanelli party from Clifton N.J. fell 2 short of limiting out on
Striped bass while drifting worms in the Sandy Hook rips. On Friday the boys
from Chrysler (Orangeburg) hit a home run on the bottom and ended the day at
23rd. We fished a nice piece of Sandy Hook reef (So.) and were on the Sea
bass in no time. We drifted squid/worms hi - lo style and doubled up often.
The pool fish went to "Mad Jack", a pair of 3-1/2lb
Sea bass. We left the reef with 45 Sea bass and threw back close to another
25. We then sailed to 23rd on the way home. We got there at 1:30 and waited
only 20 minutes till the bite turned on. I was my first trip to 23rd this
season. We boated 9 bass on plastics and a couple blue fish. We only had 2
keepers. One at 29" and another at 33". There were 11 boats there and I
noticed everyone was doing fish. A great Friday!! Today we Hit the reef again
for sea bass. We did very well taking home 38 Sea bass releasing another 30
or so. We also caught several Blacks(all released). Some of them were about 4
- 5lb. Save em for the fall. I'd be more than happy to give these #'s out to
any one who wants them. I'm always alone there. Just us and the bottom fish.
Running time from the VB is 35 - 40 min. Gota Go !! Tampa Bay Washington
game is on, it looks good .
9/ 28/00 Tom, Pacman 2, Sandy Hook Bass.
Glen Blank called me Wed. night to tell me he did good with the stripers
that day, got about 8, in the 30" bracket, on eels. Caught them in the
harbor, released all, wanted to know if I wanted to go out with him but I
already made plans to go on my boat.
Thurs. morn I stopped at Julians B&T in At. Highlands to pick up eels &
sands. Joe Julian told me bass fishing is a night time thing now. I
purchased 4 eels and got on my boat. If Glen got them in the harbor, the
bass should be at the Hook, by my thinking.
I went on my boat, Pacman 2 & fished in front of the Ammo Pier with 25
private and 3 party boats, drifting across the channel. I saw 3 small
weakfish and 1 fluke being caught in two hours. I got 0. Next I drifted
eels in the Sandy Hook Chan. and connected at buoy 12, on the lumps in
the channel, 44'-56'. Fished from 1PM to 3PM until the bite stopped, low
tide. Got 8 bass, 39", 37", 37", 34", 32", 30",
30", & 29", all on 4
eels. As soon as I drifted across the first lump I got hooked up, on
every drift, for the 2 hours fished, I was the only boat there, everyone
else was fishing for weaks & fluke, with poor results. I usually ask at
the tackle & bait shops for fish reports and find that Julians gives out
vague info, seems he keeps the good info for certain customers. Let it
be known, Bass in the day on eels at the hook.
Tom
9/24/00 East River Chas Stamm
Chas Stamm fished with the Andreasen boys again Norm and Paul Sunday
morning and had a great day in the northern sections of the East River. The trio of
anglers had fish on every drift of striped bass and bluefish. Both the stripers and
blues were all in the 7 to 12 pound range. Live eels worked well but they
didnt last long with the big bluefish in the area. After that bucktail jigs
worked just as well as the eels. And they are cheaper!
9/23/00 Fishin Mission Mark Strober Fluke
Fished Saturday 9/23, the NY Harbor and surrounding areas. Water surface
temps are around 69 degrees. It was a GREAT DAY with LOTS of striped bass
caught, many of which were keeper size. All were released, some tagged.
saw the following club members out there: Ken Carson < K Seas > Ed <No
Problem> Ron & Collette < Reel Wild> Glenn Blank, Harvey Karp and many
others, saw everyone catching Striped Bass, with some fluke, sea bass &
porgies too! Largest bass was 37 inches. Eels, bunker, worms, & jigs all
worked. Tight lines
9/22/00 Screaming Reel Mike Mulligan
Fishing is good just about everywhere. On Mon, Tue & Wed. we
fished along
the N.J. beaches around Sea Bright and Mammoth. Plenty of action with
Bluefish & Albi's. At times it was exhausting. Castmasters & 007's did the
trick. The Albi's could be picky at times. Bottom line is fabulous fishing,
bluefish #'s in upwards of 60 - 70 for four anglers per trip and a grand
total of 31 Albi's for the week. The rest of the week was spent on the bottom
with sea bass & fluke. We fished the two wrecks in the 700/850 area and
managed to fill the box with sea bass. The pool fish caught by Jose Fresca on
Friday was a 4-1/2 lb sea bass. Jose later boated a 7 lb. fluke and finished
the day with 3 sea bass over 3 lb and limiting on fluke from 2 - 7 lb. This
was the best fluke action I've had in ions. Today we fished some of the rock
piles around Shrewsbury and had no problem finding sea bass and yet again,
fluke ! The sea bass bite was non-stop with 2 fish reaching 3 lb and 3 fish
making close to 4 lb. The fluke were incidental at first but after 9
incidentals we figured there was fluke down there. Kevin Mackey from
Middletown N.J. nailed his limit with fluke and toped out with a 6-1/2 lb
flattie on the last drop. The Screaming Reel boated more fluke this week than
all of August. Not a banner season with fluke for us. I'm hearing the bite in
the rivers/harbor is picking up. "No Problem" scored 20 keeper bass on Sat.
at the 31, Glen was into them on Sunday and I just read Chas's report. I'm
looking forward to it. See ya on Tuesday. TWO DAYS OFF(in a row)
9/17/00 East River Blues and Stripers
HRFA director Chas Stamm fished with Norm and Paul Andreasen on Sunday and
enjoyed a wonderful day with the striped bass and bluefish passing through the area.
Sandworms and lures were used for most of the incoming tide with out much success.
As soon as a live eel was put in the water both the bass and the blues came alive. Triple
headers on every drift with bass up to 12 pounds and bluefish up to 10 pounds. birds
were found early in the morning working the lower sections of the East River which
produced small stripers and small blues working the baitfish tot he surface. The
larger fish came out of the northern sections off the bottom. Water temps were consistent
at the 72 degree mark. The team of anglers worked the incoming tide only and released all
the fish. Winds were not a problem until late in the afternoon when it really
started to kick up from the south.

9/16/00 Tom Paciorkowski
Very good info on surf fishing at the Hook. Second week of Sept.
A set of 5 finger sandbars formed between Gunnison and the Fishing Beach,
just south of North Beach. These bars go out approx. 100' or so and at
the base are holes which are holding baitfish. Anyone who surf fishes
knows the importance of these bars, no further words needed. These bars
formed with all the east winds we had. Fluke are now holding in the
holes during the day, weaks and bass toward the darker hours. Good
fishing must be worked.
Tom
9/13/00 K-Seas Blues center Harbor
Captain Ken Carson reports bluefish up to ten pounds in the center of New
York Harbor. Ken was drifting in front of the Statue on Wednesday and did well
working sandworms off the bottom. for more info on the K-seas click here!*
9/11/00 Sandy Hook Fishing Report : Tom Paciorkowski
I went out Mon. Sept. 11th. Fished Ammo
Pier Chan. and got a few weakfish, sizes- 15-22 inches. There was S.E.
winds blowing across the channel, drift was south to north, last part of
low to incoming tide. About 20 private and 2 party boats were picking up
weaks, not too many, one fish for about 5 drifts was the norm. The drift
started in 20' water into the chan. (45') and out again. Fish were on
the slopes. In 5 hours fished, I caught NO fluke and did not see any
caught on the other boats. I also fished inside the bay and no fluke was
caught. I was using sand, & squid/spearing on 3 different rods. Water
temp was 70, must have been the east winds or else the fluke are already
on the ocean migration route, which to me is early this year. I saw no
birds working the whole day.
The Atlantic Highlands flats got me 8 stripers, all 18"-22" from 5:30 to
6:30 PM. Fish were up to the rocks, by the houses, in 2-4 feet of water,
eating the small baitfish which were plentiful. I used a 1 1/2 oz.
kastmaster with yellow bucktail on the hook. Method was cast and
retrieve.
Tom Ask Tom on his fishing!
9/11/00 Screaming Reel Off Shore Sea Bass
My REPORT, Another great day. I had the Alain Paul party on board from New
Windsor NY. We sailed for the Tin Can grounds in search of sea bass. We were
the only boat there and couldnt have been happier. We filled an 80qt. cooler
in 12 drifts with sea bass up to 3 1/2lbs. I cant remember sea bass fishing
this good. We then headed south toward Shrewsbury rocks and spent the next 5
hrs. Jigging blues, bonito & albi's. All you wanted !!! The Cock Robin,
Fisherman & a few other headboats were in them as well. Everyone was happy. I
really feel good about this fall. Bait was everywhere. Captain Mike

9/10/00 Screaming Reel Offshore
Got underway at 5am sharp with a good crew. The Pete Allison party did a
good job catching 5 Blue sharks to 200lbs and 2 Mako both under 100 lbs. We
fished SE of the Yankee and just north of the Virginia. Loads of porpoises
under the boat on the way home. Just inside 20 faths Bonito were all over. We
nailed a few and headed home to find hundreds of high powered, high speed
boats doing 90 up the Hudson. It wasn't easy getting into LLM. Great day !!!
9/10/00 Fishin' Mission Mixed Bag!
Hi Charlie, hope your felling much better! Fished
Saturday 9/9/00, the New
York harbor and surrounding areas. Had about 14 Striped bass to 30 inches,
bluefish, weakfish, sea bass, sea robins,& 1 fluke. Now get this
>>>>>>>>>>Club member Chip Capasso on his boat
the Reelaxation, caught a 7
foot Thresher shark about 4 miles south of Verrazanno Bridge, along with
another boat, Frank Johnson's Tin Can also caught a 5 footer in same area
both sharks were caught on FLUKE rigs!!!!!!!!! On the offshore fishing Manny
on his boat the Jeannie Too caught a 9 foot sword fish at the Hudson Canyon!
Way to go guys with these fine catches!!!
9/9/00 Screaming Reel Offshore / Inshore
Dont have alot of time so I'll cram what I have in. It's been a good week
with the exeption of the 2 off shore trips. Last Sunday I had the George Kay
party off shore for some day time trolling. One knock down and a few Bones
and Albi's. A very long day. We fished the 30 fath. curve and SE tward the
Bacardi. Very little life and a lot of bitchin on the radio. Seems everyone
was "in search of "and not catchin. In shore fishing has improved
dramatically. You can make a living at the tin can grounds with fluke, sea
bass(jumbo) and porgy. Bluefish are also a safe bet around 17, Mud and the
Farms. If your after Bonito & Albi's just go off shore 2-3 miles and
parrellel the NJ beaches and you'll bump into them. Weaks have been a good
pick around Chappel hill and the Reach. We had a 8.8lb. weak hit the deck
with sevral 5-7lb. fish as well. Culprit worms(white) out fished everything.
All in all its good. I'll be hiting the tin can grounds for those jumbo sea
bass and fluke untill they move out. I have a few Fridays & Sundays open if
anyone is interested. There is still time to go off shore and I'm ready for 1
or 2 overnight canyon chuncking trips. (914)446-5040. Chas, How did you do
upstate ? Capt. Mike
9/8/00 Weakfish Tom Paciorkowski
Did a little surf fishing at the Hook on Thursday. It was a little
difficult with the S.E. wind but caught a few Blues, 18-24 inches, in the
wash.
A lot of plastic bags were in the water due to the east winds the past
couple of days, and I do mean A LOT. Don't know where they came from but
there were many, saw one or two every 5 minutes drift by, some getting
hung up on my line occasionally. Could be a problem with boaters, watch
the water intake on the motor.
Went to the Atlantic Highlands launch ramp in the afternoon and got first
hand info on the weakfish catch. Small boaters were nailing them on the
right side of the ammo pier using sand worms, although the weekies were
hitting plastic worms the majority were on live bait. Drifting near the
Leonardo Channel on the side of the pier was the area. Fish size; mostly
15-20 inches with a few 5 to 8 pounders for every boat I questioned.
Seems these fish are hanging out in this area for the past 2-3 weeks,
reliable source of info.
Tom Ask Tom on his fishing!
9/7/00 Musky Daze
Chas, Every once in awhile it all comes together.I had my 9 year old son,
Zane out muskie fishing on Friday. Zane had his best day ever. He caught 5
muskies. They were 31,32,37,38, and 43 inches. The 43 was about 23 lbs. He
really had his hands full because he hooked that one on a pretty light rod.
Yea, and I managed to catch one too. Mine happened to be the biggest muskie
I've ever caught out of GWL at 49 1/2 inches. Zane caught his on bucktails
and crankbaits and I got mine on a jerkbait. What a day. Never gonna forget
it. John
9/3/00 Sandy Hook Tony Evangelista
I just got back from the Hook not much doing a couple of small blues,
no one
catching any stripers this morning, I saw some peanut bunker up at harding
point than took a walk over to the bay and saw some people with there seine
nets filled with snappers and some spearing. I ran into an old friend he said
he fished Wed. and released 11 stripers nor'easter winds also driving in the
blues up to 8lbs.
