That's right... Connery came back to do one more film after he quit!
Diamonds Are Forever wasn't the greatest of the Bond films (It's more like a Moore film
than a Connery film) but it was wildly popular for the fact that Connery was in it. I can
only imagine the audience going nuts when old Sean appears in the pre credits sequence all
overweight and looking ragged saying "My name is Bond. James Bond" in a thick
Scottish brogue.
The film closes out an era. SPECTRE is gone, Blofeld's last official
appearance in the EON films (save for an out of place cameo in For Your Eyes Only) and
Connery's last official 007 role (not counting Never Say Never Again).
Personally, I feel this is one of the stupidest Bond films ever.
The fact that it didn't date well doesn't help
Trivia
When the producers knew they
needed a new star, one of the names kicked around was Burt Reynolds.
Jimmy Dean, who played Willard
Whyte, is the same Jimmy Dean who makes delicious breakfast sausage!
Blofeld in this go around was
played by Charles Grey. Grey had plyed Henderson in You Only Live Twice
The End of Diamonds Are
