NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN 1983 The big news of 1983 was that of Sean Connery's return as 007. This was in the film Never Say Never Again. After purchasing the wide screen format of the film and just watching it (up until now, I just had a copy I made off ABC tv from 12 years ago), I have some new insight on it. As we probably all know, Kevin McClory owns the rights to the movie version of Thunderball, of which NSNA is a remake. SPECTRE swipes two nuclear missles and it's up to an aged 007 to come back into active duty to save the day. Watching Connery in this film makes you wonder if this is how he would still play Bond if he never quit the role. Problably not. he seems to treat the character with the respect due to him, and plays 007 with a certain grace of an old master. The problem for me with the movie is that all the other parts (save for Felix Leiter) are all spoofs on the EON films. Edward Fox's M tries to be tough, but when he contacts Bond on the US sub 3/4 of the way through the movie, he comes off as a buffoon ("I'll buy you lunch at my club as a thank you, Bond") Algernon, as head of Q branch is a parody of Desmond Llewellyn's "Q" or Major Boothroyd. Moneypenny is also a spoof on Lois Maxwell. Other than that, the film is highly entertaining, although it didn't age well. The aforementioned wide screen letterbox format helps the movie. The sets are very elegant and upscale. As it is not and EON production, don't look for the opening gun barrel or typical bond music. This does not detract from the movie though. I look at this as a possible alternate Bond. A Bond who never really dealt with SPECTRE until later in life. A 007 who may never have met Tracy and got married, as Blofeld is still around. It would be interesting to delve into the background and history of THIS James Bond. |
