2 Stage High Powered Rocket

Last updated on: July 28, 2002
This is what I started out with

This is the Booster

A picture of the Sustainer
with a 38 mm motor mount & the conduit for igniter leads

This is the Inter-stage coupler /altimeter bay
I'm in the process of repainting it , so I took some pics .
Some people get stumped on how to join to 2 stages together .
I know because I was one of those people .

Here we are looking down into where the upper stage or sustainer sits;
@ the bottom I screwed a stainless steel plate on to a 1/4 ply wood bulkhead
to seal out the exhaust from the 1 gram separation charge that I use .
To the left the altimeter slides into the bottomm of the IC

Well, I got to fly it at NY Power '99 on July 4th weekend .
The weather was really HOT !!!!
I  flew it on an 3-I300's &  in the sustainer an
I 284 instead of the planned J 350
because I found a bad liner in my J 350 reload kit .
Here are the stats recorded by my IA-X96 .
If anyone has any video footage of this flight please E-mail me

Max altitude:  5,576.36
Barometric altitude: 5,016 ft
Max. velocity: 463 mph
Max. acceleration: 12.52 g's
Burnout altitude:  330 ft
Burnout time: 2.06 sec.

Here's 2 pics of it coming off a 16 foot rail
on the 3-I 300's

Everything went well except ; the main never deployed .
Upon retrieval of the rocket remains I determined that : The hard jerk of the apogee charge popped the battery out of its holder ; Causing it to fall from 5,000+ feet .
The payload section was totally destroyed !
My coupler altimeter bay was able to hold up to the punishment .
The Sustainer was snapped in half  ,but repairable & has been rebuilt .
