Abby & Grandpa

Abigail and Grandpa at Her 1st Birthday Party!

I was born and raised in Elizabeth, NJ and have been married to my wife Frances for 37 years. Fran is the most kind, considerate person in the world, and on May 5th, 1999 she donated one of her kidneys to me so that I might live....I thank her with all my heart and know deeply that I have found a real "treasure" in her...God Bless Her for such an unselfish act of love and kindness....I am a truly blessed man.

My Work

I work for E.F. Britten & Co, Inc. in Cranford, NJ where we make aircraft de-icing valves for B.F. Goodrich Inc. and specialty gas containers and valves.  Our newest product, Travalite, is a new concept in golfing equipment for the "Golfer on the go".

                   My Hobby - Amateur Radio

 Telegraph Key

Needless to say, Amateur Radio is my hobby. I have been enjoying it for 20 years now and it still gives me great pleasure. An Extra Class operator, I have made many friends all over the world talking through the one common language that all Amateurs understand CW, or as most people know it Morse Code. This is my favorite mode although not the most popular, but to me the most rewarding. After a contact is made, most times a card called a QSL, is exchanged between operators. These cards are either exchanged via direct mail or via the QSL bureau. QSL Bureaus collect cards from operators in their respective countries and forward them to bureaus in other countries, where they are distributed by persons to other operators who are eagerly awaiting them. These QSL cards are collected by many people for many reasons, including certificates and awards which are fiercely sought after by some people. I have personally collected at least one QSL from 340 different countries in the world, although through time and political changes, some are still not in existance. I am a member of the North Jersey DX Association (NJDXA), which has been volunteering to distribute QSL cards for 40 years! Our members work very hard to mail the countless thousands of cards each month to members in the second call area. Our club members all use the exclusive NJDXA QSL which is at the top of the page. I am proud to be a member of this very fine organization since 1984. Another group of which I am happy to be a member of since I was first licensed is the Electronic Technology Society of NJ (ETSNJ) which does a very excellent job also in our local area.

                    Topband                     160rig.gif (3899 bytes)

My favorite band is the 160 meter band which is 1.800 mhz. This is the lowest frequency that U.S. Amateurs are allowed to operate on. If you look at the dial on your broadcast radio, the dial would probably end at 1.600 mhz. So, this band is just a bit away from the broadcast band. 160 meters, or Topband as it is fondly referred to by Amateurs is primarily a night time band. Also dubbed the "Gentleman's Band", many groups of people hold nightly meetings on the air to chat or "chew the rag"...Another type of operator is the DX'er, who is looking for Intercontinental contacts which are possible when conditions are good. I am one of the latter. Making world-wide contacts on Topband can be very habit-forming and may lead to insomnia! I have made contacts with over 152 different countries on this band thus far and still enjoy just hearing their signals cutting through the static or QRN as it is called. Some operators, over the years have had the patience and skills to make over 300 different countries to their credit. At one time, only 100 watts of power was allowed. Now the U.S. legal limit of 1500 is permitted.

Interested In Amateur Radio?

If you are interested in becoming an Amateur radio operator, and think it is difficult it's not. There are licenses available for people who want to communicate via digital means. Radio Teletype and Packet radio are very popular modes. I have contacted the Russian Space shuttle MIR with my computer connected to my radio using packet radio. There are people who have their video cameras linked to their radios and they send their pictures and voices live to each other. Many would-be operators are afraid they have to be electronic wizards, but nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact the test and test answers are available for study before you take the exam. There are many Radio Clubs that give lessons and Volunteer Examiners (VE's) regularly administer the Exams. The American Radio Relay League is the Organization that does a great deal for United States Amateurs. Many thousands are members. Their Headquarters is in Newington Ct. If you are interested, ask any Amateur or send me a message and I will try be of assistance to you.
