Sony Development
Blue Sky Concept
This is an unbuilt concept for SonyWonder Technology Lab in New York. "Discovery On-Location" was conceived as a place where kids could have fun learning about television production and electronic communication. The attraction was designed as a joint venture with Discovery Communications (Discovery Channel, TLC, etc.), which would have supplied much of the program content.

James Wassell did much of the initial design work and provided the illustrations. Karl Sjodahl served as the producer on the project, did all the electronic manipulation of the designs, and created the plans and presentations.

NOTE: Because this concept was not built, information about specific show content proposed for the experience can not be included here.

At the heart of the attractrion are two rear-projection and green-screen insert stages where kids (or adults) can put themselves into a variety of interesting situations. Teleprompters provide copy and instructions for the "talent" with assistance from SonyWonder's "Director". Visitors in the queue line and in other parts of the Professional Studios area can watch the fun on a series of overhead monitors. A tape of each guest's "production" is available for purchase at the end of the visit.
The first view visitors had of the proposed attraction was from the Communication Bridge, overlooking SonyWonder's "Professional Studios" exhibits.

The overhead centerpiece for the exhibit was Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Projection map of the earth, with population centers illuminated by fiber optics.

The attraction combined two blue-screen production sets with editing and live switching experiences. It was designed to fit within existing structural elements, and replace SonyWonder's original television studio attractions.
