Working with Walt Disney Imagineering was a real thrill. There are few places with more talented and creative individuals than on the company's Glendale campus. The job gave me a priceless introduction to how things "could" be done in themed entertainment. I developed an appreciation for all of the elements of successful design, and I consider myself quite fortunate for having had the chance to contribute to Disney projects.

Disney is understandably cautious about releasing material about the company's developmental efforts, so there are only a few images I can share from the work I did at WDI. The following images are from only one project, the upgrade of "The Universe of Energy" at EPCOT. They don't say too much about the project, but they give a taste of the kind of work we were doing.

EPCOT CENTER
The Universe of Energy
Presented by EXXON

PROPOSED UPGRADES:
New Kinetic Film Pre-Show
New Environment in Load Area
New Film Story for Theater One
Updated Scenes & Story in the Dinosaur Diorama
New Scenes & Film In Theater Two
New Film Finale
New Energy Garden
New And Updated Energy Interactives

The Universe of Energy team involved a large number of people, representing most of the Imagineering disciplines. The core creative team for this phase of development was:
Executive Producer: Barry Braverman
Show Producer: Karl Sjodahl
Concept Designer: Jim Steinmeier
Show Designer: Ray Spencer

Here are two images Ray created to illustrate our ideas.
These were a small part of a thirty page presentation prepared
to communicate the entire concept.

DESCRIPTION: The physical setting in Theater One will receive a more dramatic and theatrical atmosphere. The gold curtains will be replaced by fiber optics on black curtains to suggest a vast star field. A powerful new energy symbol will be added to the space as a visual icon. This "energy ball" will be a large scale animated lighting effect, representing the harnessing of the Earth's fundamental energy sources. This enhanced environment will provide an appropriate backdrop for the cosmic story about to unfold.

Following a short film segment, and a trip through the popular Dinosaur Diorama,
the ride vehicles enter the second major theater space...

DESCRIPTION: Guests enter Theater Two through a curtain of fog. At the far side of the room, a three dimensional and projected vista portrays the end of the dinosaurs... starting at sunrise in a desolate mud flat and a vast bone yard. This sequence comes to life as the guests enter the space. Once the cars arrive in Theater Two, the narration resumes, giving milestones along the Cosmic Calendar and emphasizing the vast changes in the continents and life forms during the Eocene and the Ice Age... As we witness wrenching geologic changes in the Ice Age, we are shaken by a violent lightning storm...
