The Cornerstone

Karen Elizabeth Bush

What do you get when you mix five friends,
a pile of rubble where an old school once stood,
a century-old treasure hunt,
and a whole summer in which to unlock a mystery?

What happens
when you add a little touch
of the old West for seasoning,
and, for good measure,
toss in a stray cat with an attitude?

The answer is to be found in The Cornerstone,
in which Karen Elizabeth Bush
draws on her knowledge of
children and history
to create a tale of exploration and adventure
sure to appeal to the whole family.

When their beloved old school building
is demolished,
Georgeanna Vitale, Beth-Ann "Pickle" Dillman, Stacey Standish, Mike Blaine, and Todd Andrews
are drawn irresistibly to the scene of destruction.
There, they begin their summer-long adventure
with the discovery of a time capsule
sealed in the school's cornerstone over a century before.
Aided and abetted by elderly Miss Miriam Hepworth,
the children soon are off
on the trail of a mysterious message
left for them by children a hundred years ago.
The age-old lure of buried treasure
is made even richer by the friends they make
as they puzzle out clues almost erased by time.

Discovery leads to discovery. The respect they've earned from adults in the community makes it possible for the children to join archaeologists in exploration of an Indian burial ground.

Parents let them adopt a rather special stray cat, and they find that their new-found friend, Miss Miriam, has an unusual connection with an old-West gunslinger.

As the small town of Hendersonville
discloses its history to the determined investigators,
adults and children alike
find that loyalty and patience bring rewards of further adventure,
and the next fascinating story is waiting just around the corner.
By the time the summer is over,
the five explorers have made
the town aware of a part of its heritage
that might otherwise have gone unnoticed,
and they have provided their new modern school
with a vital link to the people
who built the venerable old building that preceded it.
