Parsippany Columbus Day Tournament

WILDCATS SHUT OUT OPPOSITION TO WIN PARSIPPANY TOURNAMENT!

Saturday, October 10, Parsippany

Wildcats 2 vs. Denville Hurricanes 0

Conditions: 50's, cloudy, breezy, wet, muddy

The Wildcats faced their toughest competition of the Parsippany Columbus Day Tournament in their opening game against the Denville Hurricanes. The two teams battled fairly evenly well into the first half. The Wildcats penetrated the Denville defense at the 15 minute mark, when Tobin dribbled through several defenders in the middle and passed to Sara who one-touched a blast into the far corner from 20 yards out. Denville fought back hard, but most of their offensive opportunities were cut short by strong defensive play by Ally, Lauren and Megan. Nevertheless, Cailly still had more action in the goal during the first half of this game than she's seen all season. Her well-timed charge from the goal denied Denville's best scoring opportunity of the day. Not until midway through the second half were the Wildcats able to widen their lead, when Cailly dropped a pass to Melissa who drilled a shot to the far post from the 18. The Wildcats controlled the remainder of the game, with excellent midfield play by Kelsey and Courtney.

Wildcats 6 vs. Ramapo Wildcats 0

Conditions: 50's, rain, soaked pitch

Despite pouring rain and very muddy field conditions, the Wildcats splashed their way to a 6 - 0 victory over the Ramapo Wildcats. The tone was set early, when Sara crossed to BeeCee who fired a shot into the back of the net. Minutes later BeeCee drove a corner kick right to Ally who one-touched the ball into the goal. The third goal was scored when Courtney dug the ball out of the mud, just inches in front of the goal line, and slipped it by the Ramapo keeper who was flat on the ground after having just deflected a shot by Kelsey. Cailly scored the fourth goal off a beautiful series of one-touch passes that ran the entire length of the field. The ball started at the Wildcats end with Megan feeding the ball to Melissa, who passed to Katelyn on the left wing, who then passed to Sara in the middle, who did a give-and-go with Katelyn and delivered the ball to Cailly, who had anticipated the pass and drove the ball right by a bewildered Ramapo keeper! Sara and Allison each scored in the second half, bringing the final score to 6 - 0. Excellent midfield ball control by Marisa, Megan and Nicole kept Ramapo from posing any serious offensive threats.

Wildcats 5 vs. Mt. Olive Goal Getters 0

Conditions: 50's, cloudy, breezy, soggy pitch

The Wildcats picked up right where they left off on Saturday, easily defeating the Mt. Olive Goal Getters, 5 - 0. The Mt. Olive team was big and aggressive, and put alot of pressure on the Wildcats early in the game, but they folded after the Wildcats put in the first two goals. BeeCee scored midway through the first half, sneaking the ball through a confused muddle in front of the goal mouth. Minutes later, Katelyn made a nice cross to Sara, whose shot was deflected by the goalie, and Cailly put away the rebound. Allison scored the third goal, drilling a shot to the back of the net off a cross from Marisa. Marisa put the next goal in herself, and Lauren finished the scoring, deflecting a shot by BeeCee. The midfield did a good job of keeping the ball in the Mt. Olive end of the field, and defenders Abbey and Katie denied the Goal Getters many serious scoring opportunities. Cailly and Megan had great performances in the goal throughout the weekend, allowing no goals and recording their second straight tournament shutout!

Bordentown Thanksgiving Tournament

The Wildcats took first place in a very competitive Bordentown Thanksgiving Tournament, where they faced two top-flighted eastern Pennsylvania teams and a Moorestown team that they had recently edged out in the semifinals of the NJ State Cup.

Saturday, November 28, Bordentown

Wildcats 1 vs. Moorestown Stompers 0

Conditions: 30's, sunny, slippery, frozen pitch

The Wildcats took a while to wake up for their 8:00 am match against the Moorestown Stompers. The Stompers came out strong, eager to even the score against their State Cup rivals, and they clearly dominated the first quarter of the game. Melissa had a great come-from-behind tackle on a Stomper breakaway that looked like it would have been a sure goal, and Cailly had several excellent first-half saves. The Wildcats came alive in the second half, but still did not demonstrate their usual style. Marisa put the 'Cats on the board early in the half, when her corner kick was deflected into the goal by a Moorestown defender. Lauren neutralized the Stomper's best offensive player, and Megan had a couple terrific saves in the second half, preserving the Wildcat win.

Wildcats 0 vs. Lower Merion Warriors 2

Conditions: 50's, sunny, firm pitch

The Wildcats succumbed to the Lower Merion Warriors in an uncharacteristically sloppy game. Handicapped by injuries and a short roster, the Wildcats were on their heels the entire game, committing several defensive miscues and failing to generate any offensive momentum. The door was left wide open for two second- half goals by the Warriors.

Sunday, November 29, Bordentown

Wildcats 2 vs. Council Rock FC Attack 1

Conditions: 60's, sunny, firm pitch

The Wildcats returned to their winning ways, defeating the Council Rock FC Attack 2-1, to take first place in the tournament.

Council Rock shocked the Wildcats into action after they stormed down the field and fired in a goal only minutes into the game. Somerset Hills quickly regrouped and rallied, though, with stingy defense and smart, efficient, passing that soon led to a goal of their own. Melissa sent a goal kick to Sara, who crossed a long ball from the left side to Abbey on the right, who scrambled for possession, turned and beat the Council Rock keeper with a shot just inside the far post. Abbey scored again ten minutes later, when Lauren fed a nice pass to Cailly, who then sent a power pass through the middle to Abbey. Abbey took off on a breakaway and blasted a shot past the keeper, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats preserved their win by battling Council Rock on fairly equal terms throughout a very suspenseful, scoreless second half. The entire Wildcat team stepped up to earn the hard-fought victory. Allison, Courtney, Katie, Lauren, Megan and Melissa provided a strong defense, while midfielders Kelsey, Marisa, Nicole and Sara controlled and distributed the ball well in the midfield. Forwards Abbey, Cailly and Katelyn hustled and kept persistent pressure on the Council Rock defense. Ally and Cailly had several excellent saves in goal.

Conditions: 80s, overcast, humid, firm pitch

WILDCATS WIN FIRST ROUND OF NJ STATE CUP
The Wildcats won their first round of the NJ State Cup tournament, with a decisive 4 - 0 victory over Twin County Spirit. The tone for the game was set early, with the Wildcats controlling the midfield with superb ball control and passing. The Wildcats scored shortly into the first period as BeeCee jarred the ball loose from the Twin County goalie and passed to Ally, who deposited it into the net. Marisa scored the second goal, when she carried a pass from Abbey deep into the right corner and lofted a shot over the outstretched arms of the Twin County goalkeeper, giving the Wildcats a 2 - 0 halftime lead. The scoring continued in the second half, when Cailly dropped a pass to BeeCee, who drilled a shot into the net from 25 yards out. BeeCee finished the scoring for the day when she received a slick pass from Ally and converted from 20 yards out. Outstanding defense smothered any Twin County offensive attempts, leaving the Wildcat goalkeepers untested.

Wildcats 1 vs. TBAA Parrotheads 0

Conditions: 60's, sunny, firm pitch

WILDCATS WIN THIRD ROUND OF STATE CUP
The Wildcats edged out the TBAA Parrotheads in their toughest competition to date, and thus advanced to the quarterfinal round of the State Cup Tournament. Putting immediate pressure on their opponents' defense, the Wildcats executed a series of pinpoint passes down the field, and stunned the Parrotheads with a couple quick shots on goal. The Wildcats were aggressive to the ball and maintained good control with sharp passing, but had trouble getting by the Parrotheads' sweeper, who was very effective in clearing the ball deep back into the Wildcats' end of the field. The two teams battled back and forth fairly evenly throughout most of the first half. The Wildcats' defensive team of Ally, Megan, Lauren, Katie and Melissa played exceptionally well, turning back most of the Parrotheads' offensive advances. Cailly had a tremendous save midway through the half, leaping into the air to catch a high crossing shot. With only 20 seconds remaining in the half, the Parrotheads were called on a hand-ball infraction just outside their box. Taking no time to set up, Melissa rocketed a direct kick over the Parrotheads' defending wall and into the upper left corner of the net.

TBAA really put the pressure on in the second half, determined to even the score. They almost succeeded on a breakaway, but Melissa caught the attacker before she got the shot off. The Wildcats held onto their lead with smart offensive teamwork and stubborn defense. Cailly preserved the 1 - 0 win with a couple more clutch saves late in the half. The Wildcats are going to Fort Dix!

NJ State Cup Quarterfinals

Wildcats 2 vs. Washington Township Rockets 0

Conditions: 70's, sunny, breezy, firm pitch

WILDCATS MAKE FINAL 4!

The Wildcats prevailed by a score of 2 - 0 over the Washington Township Rockets, in another tough match-up in the quarterfinals of the NJ State Cup tournament. Washington Township, a strong southern New Jersey team, challenged the Wildcats at both ends of the field, but ultimately yielded to the Wildcats' relentless attack.

Both teams were aggressive from the outset, but neither was able to gain a clear advantage during the first 20 minutes of the game. Then the Wildcats finally found the mark, when a high cross from the left sideline by Sara bounced off the Washington keeper's outstretched hands and was stuffed into the back of the net by Tobin. The Wildcats were able to preserve their lead with magnificent goaltending by Cailly, who caught two hard shots over her head midway through the half. The Rockets nearly scored late in the half when Cailly lost control of one of their shots, and the ball was loose in front of the goal. Cailly swung around, on the ground, and swiped the ball out from under a Rocket's foot as she was just about to put it into the wide-open Wildcat net.

The second half was very physical, as the Rockets battled to even the score. The Wildcats fought back with persistent offensive pressure, augmented by BeeCee and Ally. About 20 minutes into the half the Rockets were called for pushing on their own 25, and the Wildcats were awarded a direct kick. Melissa launched a beautiful shot, against the wind, which the goalkeeper deflected, and Tobin was there to nail the rebound, giving the Wildcats a 2 - 0 lead. In the closing minutes, the Wildcat defensive team of Megan, Lauren and Katie stifled a desperate Rocket attack to seal the victory.

The Wildcats face the Moorestown Stompers in the semifinal round next Saturday at Fort Dix.

NJ State Cup Semifinals

Wildcats 2 vs. Moorestown Stompers 0

Conditions: 50's, sunny, gusty, firm pitch

WILDCATS BLANK THE MOORESTOWN STOMPERS, TO ADVANCE TO STATE CUP FINALS!!!

The Moorestown Stompers rarely escaped their own half of the field in the first half of the game, as the Wildcat forwards and midfielders monopolized ball possession. About 20 minutes into the game, Abbey crossed the ball from the left to BeeCee, who relayed the ball to Megan, who deflected to Sara, who charged the ball at the 18 and launched a shot that brushed off the tips of the goalkeepers' outstretched fingertips for the first score. Shortly thereafter, Moorestown mounted a fierce counterattack, and nearly scored on a breakaway, but Cailly came out of the goal and pressured the Stomper into shooting wide of the net. The Wildcats continued to dominate the second half, allowing the Stompers only one real scoring opportunity, which Marisa blocked in front of the goal. Lauren effectively shut down the Stompers' speedy center forward, and Abbey, Ally and Melissa did a tremendous job on defense, smothering any Stomper offensive attempts. With only minutes remaining in the game, Sara threaded a pass from the right side to BeeCee in the middle of the field, where BeeCee dodged several defenders, beat the only remaining Stomper, drew the goalkeeper out, cut to the left, and placed a perfect shot into the far right corner of the goal.

NJ STATE CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

Wildcats 0 vs. Wyckoff Torpedoes 1 (OT)

Conditions: 50's, sunny, gusty, firm pitch

WILDCATS NIPPED BY WYCKOFF TORPEDOES IN WANING SECONDS OF NJ STATE CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

The Wildcats' quest for the girls U-11 state title fell just short with only five seconds remaining in the second overtime period of the championship match with the Wyckoff Torpedoes Sunday. As the final seconds ticked away, a Wyckoff forward corralled a corner kick in front of the Wildcats' goal and placed a sharply angled shot just inside the far post for a 1 - 0 Torpedo victory.

Wyckoff was clearly the strongest opponent the Wildcats faced in six rounds of state cup play, and fans of both teams agreed that this was the most fiercely contested match in memory. Faced with the Torpedoes' larger size and equivalent speed and quickness, the Wildcats relied on determination, skill, and awesome goalkeeping by Cailly to stay within one shot of victory throughout 79 minutes and 55 seconds of the contest.

The Wildcats demonstrated tremendous skill and stamina, both offensively and defensively, throughout the match. The offensive team of BeeCee, Tobin, Marisa, Kelsey and Sara attacked Wyckoff with repeated thrusts toward the Torpedo goal that were often just a touch short of scoring. One of the Wildcats' best scoring opportunities came during a scramble at the goal mouth for three or four rebounds after a long shot by Sara. Play was stopped by the referee when the Torpedo goalkeeper fell with an injury.

The Wildcats' defensive team of Melissa, Ally, Megan, Katie, and Lauren frustrated Wyckoff's offensive efforts with fast pursuit and great tackles that halted several Torpedo breakaways. At the beginning of the second half, Melissa used perfect anticipation and timing to strip the ball away from a streaking Torpedo, depriving her of what appeared to be a sure goal. Minutes later, Courtney had a terrific goal-saving block. Lauren did a fabulous job marking Wyckoff's center forward, and Abbey was especially effective defending against a very fast outside wing. Nicole, Allison, and Katelyn provided aggressive midfield support.

The most memorable aspect of the match was Cailly's goalkeeping. On the occasions when the Torpedoes were able to penetrate the Wildcat defense, they fired with accuracy, and Cailly had several phenomenal saves. One of the Torpedoes blasted a high, hard shot just below the crossbar. Cailly leaped up, plucked the ball out of the air with her fingertips, and then clutched it under control in the midst of an onslaught of Torpedo attackers vying for a rebound opportunity. In recognition of her outstanding performance, the tournament officials cited Cailly as the most valuable player of the game, and awarded her the Snickers Youth Soccer Fair Play Award. Congratulations, Cailly!

Regular Season

Sunday, September 20, Millburn

Wildcats 1 vs. Millburn Mischief 1

Conditions: 90s, sunny, rock-hard field

WILDCATS TIE MILLBURN, 1- 1

The Wildcats tied Millburn Mischief, 1 - 1, in their opening game of the regular season. Millburn came out strong and the two teams battled back and forth in the midfield for most of the first half. Millburn eventually broke loose, and scored the first goal on a breakaway from midfield. They had another breakaway opportunity just minutes later, but Megan charged out of the net and grabbed the ball at the top of the box. The Wildcats dominated the entire second half, keeping the ball in Millburn's end of the field, but they were unable to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities. Finally, Tobin tied the game off a cross by BeeCee.

WILDCATS TURN BACK RIPTIDE, 2 - 0

The Wildcats claimed their second victory of the season, beating the West Windsor Riptide 2-0. Slippery field conditions contributed to sloppy play, but the Wildcats dominated throughout the game. An offsides call by the ref brought back what could have been another goal by Melissa. Cailly made a fabulous save midway through the second half, and then intense pressure by the Wildcats kept the Riptide in their own end for the remainder of the game.

Wildcats 2 vs. Montclair Bluehawks 1

Conditions: 70's, sunny, firm pitch

The Wildcats extended their unbeaten streak to 3 - 0 - 1 in regular season play, defeating the Montclair Bluehawks 2 - 1. Montclair jumped out to an early lead on a breakaway midway through the first half. Despite numerous scoring opportunities and many shots on goal, the Wildcats were unable to get the ball past the Montclair keeper until late in the first half. A dangerous kick by Montclair just outside their box gave the Wildcats an indirect kick. Melissa hammered a shot to the front of the net and Cailly headed the ball past the goalkeeper, putting in the first Wildcat "header" of the season (and earning ice cream sundaes for everyone!). Midway through the second half Allison scored the go-ahead goal, with a blast from the left corner of the penalty box.

Sunday, October 25, Basking Ridge

Wildcats 0 vs. Millburn Mischief 0

Conditions: 70, sunny, firm pitch

The Wildcats tied Millburn again in their second encounter of the regular season. This game was a repeat performance of the last one, with the Wildcats spending most of the game in Millburn's end of the field. The offense controlled the game and had multiple scoring opportunities, but couldn't quite find the net. Ally blasted a shot that slammed off the crossbar, and Tobin drilled one just inches off the right post. BeeCee, Kelsey and Marisa fought hard around the box, with strong support from the midfield. The few times Millburn penetrated the Wildcats' half of the field, the defense and goalkeepers, Megan and Cailly, rose to the occassion.

Saturday, November 7, Bridgewater

Wildcats 5 vs. Bridgewater Devils 1

Conditions: 40's, cloudy, blustery, firm pitch

The Wildcats upped their league record to 4 - 0 - 2, with a 5 - 1 win over the Bridgewater Devils.

Somerset Hills' performance in the first half of this game was in keeping with the weather -- cold! Tobin finally brought the offense to life late in the half, when she gathered a loose ball at midfield, dribbled through several defenders, blitzed down the field on a breakaway, and fired a perfect shot by the Devils' keeper. Bridgewater evened the score early in the second half, on a penalty kick. The Wildcats came right back, though, when BeeCee lofted a precision corner kick into the box, and Nicole drove it into the upper right corner of the net. Minutes later, BeeCee fed a beautiful pass to Tobin up the middle, and Tobin drilled the shot from the 18, putting the Wildcats up by 2. The Wildcats dominated the remainder of the game, with the defense rarely being tested. Allison nailed the fourth goal, off another nicely placed corner by BeeCee, which deflected off a couple Bridgewater defenders in the box. Katelyn completed the scoring for the afternoon, when she blasted a penalty shot into the top center of the net, just beyond the goalkeeper's reach.

Wildcats 3 vs. West Windsor Riptide 1

Conditions: 50's, cloudy, firm pitch

The Wildcats prevailed, by a score of 3 - 1, over a charged-up West Windsor team that has always given them a tough match.

In what seemed like a repeat performance of the match against Bridgewater the day before, the Wildcats took an entire half to warm up against the West Windsor Riptide team, which definitely came to Somerset Hills with an upset in mind. West Windsor was quick to the ball and the Wildcats were flat, which resulted in a Riptide goal midway through the first half. The Wildcats continued to be frustrated by the inspired Riptide defense until midway through the second half, when Tobin received the ball off a throw-in on the left side, and blasted a beautiful shot high into the net. This ignited the Wildcats' offense, which began to move the ball more successfully to the outside, opening up the Riptide defense. Tobin stole the ball away from West Windsor at midfield, scrambled through the middle, and drilled another shot past the keeper, putting the Wildcats up by 1. BeeCee put the icing on the cake in the final minute of play. Sara made a nice run up the left side, and crossed to Tobin in the middle. Tobin fired across the goal mouth, and BeeCee deflected a perfect ball past the Riptide keeper, just inside the right post.

Wildcats 4 vs. Bridgewater Devils 0

Conditions: 50's, sunny, gusty, firm pitch

The Wildcats dominated the Bridgewater Devils with crisp passing, quick give-and-goes, and skillful dribbling. BeeCee scored the first goal a couple minutes into the game. Kelsey passed from the right side to BeeCee, who controlled the ball in the box and slid between a defender and the keeper, pushing a shot into the right corner of the net. Ten minutes later, BeeCee scored again when Tobin lofted a high ball from the midfield, over the Devils' defenders, and BeeCee charged through on a breakaway. Tobin netted the Wildcats' third goal at the end of the first half. Katelyn dropped the ball to Tobin from the right side of the box, and Tobin faked a shot, juked around a defender, and placed the ball neatly in the left corner of the goal. Tobin scored the final goal of the day in the second half, when she stole the ball at about the 35, dribbled a few yards and fired a low shot into the left corner of the net.

The Wildcats' offense and defense were definitely in synch today, with the defense sending accurate passes to the outside, and the wings executing sharp give-and-goes with the midfielders down the line. Bridgewater rarely crossed the midpoint line, as the Wildcat defense smothered almost every ball that came their way. Cailly came out of the net to pick off one breakaway, and Megan had one save as well.

With this win, the Wildcats have extended their unbeaten streak to 6 - 0 - 2 in league play, with two games remaining in the regular season.

Wildcats 1 vs. Edison Dynamite 0

Conditions: 40's, cloudy, gusty, firm pitch

The Wildcats clinched first place in the first flight of the Mid-New Jersey Division 4 - U11 Girls, with a 1 - 0 victory over Edison Dynamite!

Edison was a much better team than they were in their first encounter with the Wildcats earlier this season. They were tenacious in their end of the field, with tight defense and aggressive tackling, limiting the Wildcats' shooting opportunities. While the Wildcats monopolized ball possession, they were unable to put it in the net until late in the first half, when BeeCee crossed a high ball over the keeper from the left side, and Marisa finished with a quick shot just inside the right post.

The Wildcats continued to dominate the remainder of the game, playing keep-away in Edison's end, but still not penetrating a wall of Dynamite defenders. The Wildcat defensive team of Abbey, Allison, Courtney, Katie, Lauren and Melissa stymied the Edison forwards, turning back any offensive advances. Edison had only one good scoring opportunity at the beginning of the second half, when a long ball got through the midfield, and one of the forwards broke loose on a breakaway and drilled a strong shot to the upper right corner of the goal. Cailly made a great save, jumping high and deflecting the shot off to the outside of the right post.

The first ten minutes of the game were sloppy, with many wild kicks and little ball control. Then BeeCee scored the first goal, off a nice pass from the left side by Lauren. The Wildcats settled into their game, and generally outplayed the Bluehawks in skill, speed, and stamina. Montclair put up a fight, but most of it was in their end of the field. The Bluehawks had difficulty generating any offense, as Wildcat midfielders Ally, Katelyn, Kelsey, Marisa, Nicole, and Sara did an excellent job of keeping the ball on the attack. Late in the second half, Tobin connected with BeeCee in "the meeting place", delivering a perfect pass which BeeCee deftly touched into the net. Goalkeepers Cailly and Megan each touched the ball only once in the entire game!

Somerset Hills claimed first place in the top flight of the Mid-New Jersey Division 4 - U11Girls, followed by Millburn, Edison, West Windsor, Bridgewater and Montclair.

The Wildcats scored a total of 25 goals in ten regular season games, and allowed only 4. Six out of the ten games were shut-outs, reflecting very impressive performances by keepers Cailly and Megan, and the defensive team anchored by Melissa at sweeper!
