New City Lions Club Sponsor a Unique Fundraising Event offering Heirloom Tomato Seedling Plants
New City, NY – Members of the New City Lions Club are pleased to announce a unique fundraising event. Their 1st Annual Heirloom Tomato Transplant/Seedling Sale will be held on May 21st. The sale will be held between 10 am and 4 pm in The Rockland County Office Building parking lot at 11 New Hempstead Road in New City, NY. This sale will help to raise money for the New City Lions Club charitable work. Alison Dolan, Secretary of the club, stated “that this time of year people are ready to plant their vegetable gardens and love to grow these delicious varieties. It is a great opportunity for us to bring these often sought after plants to the people of the community and the sale will help us raise funds for our service projects. The New City Lions Club has donated funds to the community, such as the New City Fire Department and Meals on Wheels and to sight-related organizations, such as the Association of the Visually Impaired (AVI) and Guiding Eyes for the Blind.”
As June 1st approaches, which is recognized as Helen Keller Day, this event will help raise funds for sight-related service projects. Helen Keller challenged the Lions Club to be "knights of the blind in this crusade against darkness." In keeping with this goal, the New City Lions Club will also be collecting used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of the Lions Recycle For Sight program at this event. Also in attendance will be Dolan’s new guide dog Winnie and her recently retired guide dog Colleen. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to learn more about how guide dogs assist the blind & visually impaired. For anyone not able to attend the May 21st sale, they are encouraged to bring their used glasses to the New City Library anytime. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible.
The heirloom tomato, herb, eggplant & pepper plants are grown by Susan & Richard Sisti of Catalpa Ridge Farm. More than 50 different varieties of heirloom tomato plants will be offered including some common varieties such as pink & yellow Brandywine, Rutger's and Yellow Pear and a great assortment of unusual varieties such as Pineapple, Box Car Willie, Mortgage Lifter, Green Zebra and Cherokee Purple to name a few. Anyone who wishes to see the current varieties that will be available are welcome to visit: www.jerseygrown.com for a complete listing and a pre-order form. You are also welcome to phone Sue or Rich Sisti at: 973-209-4903 (between 7-9 pm) or e-mail catalpacsa@aol.com and we can send you a form.
