Excerpts from the 1966 Catalog

Karl's guitar amp in 1968 was a VOX Model V1141 Super Beatle. His was one of six used by The Monkees at Cincinnati Gardens in 1966. It was Thomas Organ Company version of JMI's classic British valve (tube) sound, done with 1960s solid state technology. It was loud, but not too smooth. The Beatles used seven of these amps on their final US tour. Almost everyone who used the amp (including The Beatles) turned the head around backwards to get better access to the switches and jacks. Here is how it appeared in VOX's 1966 flyer which featured The Beatles on the cover (above).

VOX's 1966 foot pedal had four separate buttons, for Distortion, Reverb, Tremolo, and a momentary button for Mid-Range Boost. A small red light under the distortion button told you when your distortion was enabled. Later versions of the pedal added colored lights for Reverb and Tremolo, making the pedal look a little like a Christmas tree. For specs on the pedal, click this link, or click the image.
A Westminster like this was Tom's only VOX amp. The unit had a lot of bass, no highs, and the 18" speaker was sloppy. The trolly also had the habit of moving around the stage while we played. In sound quality, it turned out to be a step down from the Fender Bassman with two bottoms Tom had been using. He traded up to a Sunn 200S after only a few weeks... THAT was a bass amp.
