In the 1960s "Garage Band Music" referred to any popular song four or five guys with guitars, keyboards, drums, microphones, amplifiers and a little talent could play. Some songs... like "Louie, Louie" and "Gloria"... qualify as garage band classics. Almost every local band played them once or twice a night. Originality was less important than sounding reasonably good while performing music which was fun to play and fun to dance to.

Some groups wrote or arranged their own material (we even included a few original songs in our shows), but the staple of most garage bands of the 60s were covers of Top 40 hits and songs by popular local groups. WSAI 1360 was Cincinnati's dominant rock radio station throughout the 1960s. Songs which got airplay on WSAI were often requested at dances, so we kept an ear to the radio, and an eye on the station's weekly "Fabulous 40" surveys.
